'Grape', in this context, is basically a bowdlerisation of 'grope'. The actual names of these thoroughfares were very much coarser: do not follow this link if easily offended, but according to Wikipedia, what might be described as a 'half–way house' between the original and the polite modern version is 'Gropecountelane'.
